The inaugural Huon Challenge on 7 April was a resounding success.
Many thanks to our major supporters – Events Tasmania and Tassal – and to Hansen Orchards, Banjos Lindisfarne, Tahune Adventures and Hastings Caves and Thermal Pool State Reserve.
120 paddlers completed the 36km course and 12 spectators enjoyed a trip shadowing the dragon boat fleet on the Living Boat Trust’s historic ferry Nancy.
The event showcased Tasmania’s Huon River in its autumnal splendour and many participants stayed locally, taking in the many sights of the State’s fruit and salmon heartland.
Huon Challenge participating clubs were from Queensland, NSW and Victoria: Forbes, Nature Coast, Outback Dubbo, Illawarra, Great Lakes, Akuna, South C Warnambool, Pinnacle, Mudgee, Manning River, Bathurst, Bundaberg, Wallis Spirit, Dragons Afloat Bendigo, Geelong, Hervey Bay and Gippsland Waratahs. Four paddlers and two sweeps from Derwent Storms also took part.
Host club Derwent Storms was bowled over by the terrific feedback and looks forward to hosting another great event in the future.
“We had an amazing time. Can’t wait for the next Tassie venture.” Susan Colley (Bathurst Pandragons)
“A huge thank you to you Andrew and your team. Pinnacle Dragons and their fellow paddlers all had a fabulous time and appreciate all the work you’ve put into making the Huon Challenge happen … so glad we ended the marathon coming through the canal. It was just a special end to the paddle … loved exploring the Huon Valley and that corner of Tasmania. We’ll be back.” Pearl and George (Orange Pinnacle Dragons)
“Thank you and your team for the opportunity to participate in your long distance paddle … I enjoyed the whole experience immensely. I have never been to that area of Tasmania before, so to see such a beautiful part of the Island finished our time in Tassie on a real high. Thanks again to you all for your hard work, your warm welcome and, finally, the paddle!” Linda Knewstubb (Gippsland Waratahs)
“It was an amazing paddle, ran smoothly, great scenery and cuisine, and the friendliness of everyone was superb! It didn’t feel like 36kms! After the Tassie Masters and then the Huon Challenge, I think I would go to anything organised by Derwent Storms! A very Big Thank you to you all!” Sue Seath (Nature Coast)
“Loved the Huon area and how wonderful to paddle with other groups from across Australia. Looking forward to the 4 Bridges one in the future. Great Tassie hospitality, thank you.” Josie Lategan (Hervey Bay)
